Do you want your child’s smile to be healthy and strong? If so, Dr. Steven Rodriguez and our dental team are more than happy to help you and your child achieve that smile goal. There are things you can do to help your child and their little chompers, and we are happy to tell you what those are.

The first thing we recommend is bringing your child into Healthy Smiles Dental Care® of Lansing six months after their first tooth erupts or around their first birthday for their first dental checkup. This will give Dr. Steven Rodriguez a chance to examine the smile and see if it is on track. It will also give your child a chance to familiarize him or herself with the dental office so they can feel comfortable in the dental chair in the future. Lastly, it will help you care for your child’s smile because it will give you a chance to ask questions and learn more.

The second thing we recommend is cleaning your child’s smile regularly. You can do so by washing their gums with a wet washcloth (when they don’t have any teeth yet). You can also do so by brushing their little chompers with a baby or child toothbrush and water. Don’t use toothpaste quite yet. Your child won’t need toothpaste until they are 2-3 years old.

The third thing we recommend is keeping your child’s smile free from baby bottle tooth decay. In order to do so, it’s best to avoid filling your child’s bottle with sugary liquids, like juice and chocolate milk. It’s also recommended to avoid sending your child to bed with a bottle. If possible, only give your child sugary drinks in a sippy cup while they eat a meal and only put milk and formula in a bottle.
